National Honor Society Induction

Last night PMCA was honored to induct 19 new members into its chapter of the National Honor Society. Two seniors and seventeen juniors were granted membership into the organization. At a lovely ceremony in the Hamel Auditorium, guests heard speeches from current members on the five areas which NHS members are meant to exemplify. Christine Bierema spoke on Scholarship, Curtis Glover on Leadership, Dana Schnitzel on Service, Dan Kless on Character and Elia Tomer on Christ-Centeredness. Mrs. Betsy Rockey gave the charge to the new members in a speech entitled Where's Your Coat? Following the ceremony, guests joined Honor Society members for a reception. To see more pictures and a full list of new inductees, be sure to read the April Falcon Flyer, available next Friday.

Student Highlight

Sophomore Clayton Cooper has an exciting hobby; he races go karts. Several years ago his aunt told him about the Urban Youth Racing School (UYRS) in Philadelphia which teaches the different aspects of racing: engineering and mechanics, pit crews, marketing, and actual racing. He joined the program three years ago and learned to race electronic go karts. He finished third in the big race at the end of the season. After that he was invited to be part of the Philadelphia Grand Prix. As their youngest driver, age 14, he came in sixth. He then acquired a sponsor who got him a spot to race at the New Jersey Motorsports Race Park; he also took an 8 week course there last summer. He is working to get his own go kart this summer for racing in the Rotax Series. Clayton is looking at a future in mechanical or computer engineering, but watch out, Formula One, he’s also waiting for his chance to race in the big time.

11th Grade Class Trip to Gettysburg

On Monday, April 19, the 11th Grade History classes will be traveling to Gettysburg to visit the National Battlefield there. The all-day trip is in conjunction with their studies of the Civil War this year. Points of the itinerary include the new visitor center which houses an excellent museum and cyclorama depicting Pickett's Charge - the climax of the battle, and also a guided tour of the battlefield itself - Seminary Ridge, Little Round Top, Cemetery Ridge and the "High Water Mark of the Confederacy." Mr. Sorkness will lead the trip along with Mr. Struck.

PMCA Fine Arts Festival Update

Do you like to tell stories? Do you tend to captivate children with expression and
inflection when you read to them? We would love for you to make use of these gifts in the ‘Story Telling Hut’ that will be set up on Saturday, May 22 at the Fine Arts Festival.

Maybe your gift is dance and rhythm. We welcome you to put them to use as we weave this year’s theme, “Rhythms of Africa” into the art made and performances experienced. Parents and friends who have a special interest in Africa as a culture are invited to display objects, present an experience or share in the planning of this celebration of African culture and art. Please contact Matt Stemler if you'd like to be a part of this event.
