Year End News

The school year is swiftly drawing to a close. The Senior class will be off on the Class Trip next week, while the 9th-11th graders take final exams. Elementary and Middle School students have lots of special year end activities, and they finish their school year next Thursday, June 10 at noon. On Friday morning, faculty and staff will be joining the Seniors and their parents at New Covenant Church for the Senior Breakfast, a wonderful time of sharing and reminiscing. The entire school family is invited to the Graduation Ceremony on Friday, June 11 at 7 pm at New Covenant Church.

Students entering grades 2-6 will be bringing home summer reading and math packets at the end of next week, and all elementary students will be given copies of the supply list for fall. Middle School students will receive their supply lists with their report cards. Both of these lists will be posted on the PMCA website as well. Lists of required summer reading and next year's Literary Forum books were given out to high school students this week. If your child did not bring one home, you can click here to print one out.

Report cards are scheduled to be mailed out to all families the week of June 21. Please be sure that all textbooks, library books and uniforms have been returned. In addition, report cards may be held due to unpaid tuition, Learning Center or Extended Care balances.

This will be the last weekly News You Can Use for the 2009-2010 school year. Special editions will be sent out at several points during the summer as events warrant, and the weekly schedule will resume on Friday, September 3. Remember to contact the school office if your email address changes over the summer.

Uniform Policy Changes

A number of changes are in the works for the PMCA Uniform Policy for next year. A letter detailing those changes will be included in the report card mailing later this month, along with a catalog from Lands' End.
Please be watching for this information and read it carefully. We encourage all families to click here and sign up for Lands' End email updates.

This will enable you to receive offers for free shipping, uniform discounts and more.

PMCA Scrip

The PMCA Scrip  program allows you to buy gift cards to use at local and national merchants and receive rebates on your purchases.
You buy the cards from us at face value and we return the discount to you in the form of a cumulative yearly rebate (minus a 20% administrative fee). To save even more, you can use the scrip program to purchase Lands' End cards and earn a 16% rebate on your school uniform purchase! For more information on the program or to sign up, click here.

FFPM Officers Needed

Families for Phil-Mont is still looking for a Treasurer for the 2010-2011 school year. In addition, they are seeking more members for the Advisory Board.  Interested parties should contact Tricia Bernhard.

Sports Awards

Ice Cream Social

Following the Spring Sports Awards tonight, Families for Phil-Mont will be hosting an ice cream social in the cafeteria. Instead of paying a set amount for sundaes, those partaking will be asked to contribute via a free will offering. The proceeds will go toward the purchase of new equipment for the weight room.

Summer Movie Opportunity

Are you looking for fun family activities to do with your kids this summer? Since 1991, Regal Cinemas has presented a Free Family Film Festival of select movies for kids and parents.

Selected G or PG movies start at 10:00 am every Tuesday and Wednesday during the festival. Tickets and seating are first-come, first-served and are limited to theatre capacity. Tickets are available exclusively  at select theatres’ box offices on the day of the show. Click here to find details of dates and movie titles for theatres throughout PA.

Race for Education Awards

Last Friday the entire school gathered in the gym at the end of the day for the Race for Education awards. Eight students, two each from High school, middle school, upper elementary and lower elementary grades were presented with Amazon gift cards. These students all had their names entered into the prize drawing through submitting Race sponsor names and addresses. The ceremony culminated in the announcement of the trophy winners - the class with the highest lap average. This year, for the first time, a handicap system was used which took into account the length of time the various groups ran and, to some extent, differences in physical abilites among the age groups. The winners for the 2010 Race were the Kindergartners! Far from being upset about being outdone by the 'little kids', the high schoolers urged the class to run a victory lap around the gym. Led by teacher Jana McCann, and accompanied by the cheers of fellow students, the kindergartners happily obliged.

We're happy to announce that we have passed $41,000 in Race receipts!
Sports Update - Track and Field

Bright and early last Saturday morning, Jon Shope, PMCA's representative to the PIAA State Competition, took to the track in the 3,200m race. The poem below was Coach Struck's submission to the daily announcements on Tuesday. It neatly sums up Jon's performance.

SHOPE springs eternal round the track’s curve;

Jon placed fifth in the State at Shippensburg.

Another new record inscribed on the board;

A testimony to training and gifts from the Lord.

For years to come this new mark will stand;

His paces admired by many a fan.

When asked just how these fast races were run;

Through Power from within, keeping step with the SON.

Jon's fifth place finish is up from last year's 15th place standing, and matches his finish in the State Cross Country Competition last fall. Congratulations, Jon!

Student Highlight

Last week PMCA was the venue for an evening of Celtic music and dance presented by the Campbell School of Highland Dancing and the Washington Memorial Pipe Band. PMCA eighth grader Maty Ennis, pictured at left, was a member of the dance troupe. Maty began Highland Dancing at the age of 3 and already has traveled to Scotland and competed at the national level. At the 2009 US Championship in Tennessee, Maty took third place!

This coming summer, Maty will be part of a group from the Campbell School who will be traveling to Scotland to take part in a series of competitions. Highland Dancing, which emphasizes strength and agility, is performed to the music of bagpipes. As the dancers move from place to place this summer, they will experience a variety of accompanists, as each performance locale provides its own piper. Maty is a fine example of how PMCA students use the gifts the Lord has given them to honor Him.
